Monarchs cannot survive without milkweed. Monarch caterpillars need milkweed plants to grow and develop, and female Monarchs only lay their eggs on milkweed. Due to change in land conditions such as farming we have lost a lot of milkweed. This is why it is important to plant milkweed in our gardens and parks. The milkweed not only helps the Monarchs but also other pollinators such as bees and other butterflies.

What Should I Plant?

There are many different types of milkweed. To make it easy the US can be divided into 6 regions, shown in the colors on the left. It is important to plant the types of milkweed that are associated with the correct region.

If you live in the Northeast region such as Minnesota or Wisconsin it is important to plant these types of milkweed:

-Common Milkweed          -Whorled Milkweed

-Swamp Milkweed            -Butterfly Weed
