Good Monarch habitats have to meet the needs of the four Monarch life stages. Monarchs need both milkweed and nectar plants during the breeding part of their migratory cycle. They need nectar while they are making their trip south.

First Steps For Planting
  1. Chose a sunny spot for your garden

  2. Include windbreaks, an area protected from strong winds

  3. Prepare the soil: remove lawn or other plant cover and rake the soil

  4. If you don’t have a good spot consider planting in containers instead

Planting the Habitat
  1. Whenever possible, use native plants for your garden. They are more hardy and better suited for the area

  2. Find a nursery that sells native plants

  3. Using potted plants or plant plugs is best for small areas

  4. Plant perennials, plants that come back every year

  5. Choose a diverse array of plants, including ones that flower at different times in the season

  6. Avoid hybrids and cultivars that are bred for size and beauty

  7. Include species of milkweed

Maintenance
  1. Water plants until they are well established

  2. Butterfly requirements vary from site to site

  3. Weed by hand as needed

  4. If you see chewed leaves that is a good sign
